Paint Window Trim
Because window trim is exposed to the elements, temperature changes and condensation, it needs to be repainted frequently. Whether you are painting new windows or updating old windows, you can complete this home improvement project easily.
Visit your local True Value hardware store for the products and advice you need, then follow the guidelines below to get started.
Step 1. Prepare Area
Remove any window dressing from the window. Remove all hardware like locks or hinges with a screwdriver or place painter's tape over it. Be sure to use painter's tape to protect the windowsill, as well. Next, lay down a drop cloth to protect the floor. Finally, clean the glass with glass cleaner and a cloth.
Helpful Tips:
- Make sure to repair any defects or damage to the window before painting.
- Remove all loose paint with a paint scraper. If necessary, sand rough areas with a palm sander.
Step 2. Prepare Materials
If you are painting raw wood, it will need to be primed first. Older windows should also be primed. Priming will make the paint adhere and wear better. If you're just freshening up the trim, you can skip Step 3.
Step 3. Prime
Apply True Value EasyCare® latex primer with an angled paintbrush. This will help cover the edges and corners. Paint in the direction of the wood grain, back and forth for horizontal pieces and up and down for vertical pieces.
Helpful Tip:
- Lightly sanding once the primer has fully dried will make for a smoother finish.

Step 4. Paint
Use the same technique as priming to apply the first coat of True Value EasyCare® latex paint on your window trim with an angled paintbrush. Coat the brush lightly to avoid drips. This will also keep the window from sticking. Paint the top, side and bottom edges first. Then finish with the crossbars, frames, casings and sills. Allow to dry.
Helpful Tips:
- Do not paint the window jamb. This may cause the window to stick. If the jamb is wood, you can seal it with a floor wax after you paint the window.
- Do not use glass cleaner for two weeks after painting the window trim. The ammonia in the cleaner can harm the fresh paint.
Step 5. Clean-up
Remove the painter's tape after the paint has dried. Use a new, sharp, single-edge razor blade to remove any excess paint where the glass meets the wood. Remove drop cloth.
