Organize Your Garage
Is your garage growing smaller, with stuff not good enough to be in the house but not bad enough to throw away? Then it’s time to tackle the messiest, most disorganized room in your home. That’s right, it’s "garage improvement" time.
A good garage organization project can be broken down into two simple stages: 1. Cleaning the floor and hanging tools, bikes, etc. 2. Adding storage and shelving. And, of course, there's one place you'll find everything you need to get clean and organized, your local True Value store .
Part I: Start at the Bottom
Part II: Stow It, Shelve It
Part l: Start at the Bottom
Thanks to car engines and tires, garage floors take a beating. But a few simple household items can get yours clean.
Step 1: De-grease
Get rid of grease spots with cat litter and a bottle of cola. Pour the cola directly on to the grease then sprinkle with cat litter. The acid in the cola will break-up the grease. The cat litter will absorb it. Sweep up and dispose.
Quikrete® Concrete & Asphalt Cleaner, will also get the job done right, and is available at your local True Value store .
Step 2: Clean Up Your Act
Next, make a mixture of bleach, powdered laundry detergent and very hot water in a bucket and mop your floor with it. When you're done, rinse the residue down the drain with a garden hose fitted with a sprayer nozzle.
Helpful Tip:
- While you're mopping, use a push broom to scrub away stubborn stains.

Part ll: Stow It, Shelve It
Stow It
Plastic storage containers are a durable, protective and neat way to organize your stuff. They're stackable and have airtight lids so your things stay dry and dust-free for years.
Helpful Tip:
- Plastic containers from Rubbermaid® or other manufacturers also make great recycling bins. Take three different containers and designate glass, paper and aluminum to each.
Get Hooked and Hung
Your local True Value store carries a variety of hooks and hangers. Simply secure them to wall studs or ceiling rafters and you can hang anything from gardening tools and ladders to bicycles and toys. It's easier if you first drill a hole into the wood that's smaller than the attached screw. If adding the hooks to concrete walls, drill holes and pound in plastic wall anchors. Then screw in the hook.
Need more storage for books, videos, shoes or whatever? Freestanding shelving units are a simple storage solution, and your local True Value store has just what you need to maximize your garage space.
